Remember that every year tens of thousands of visitors spend a wonderful time in Mozambique and fly home safe and soundly. The biggest safefty problem is certainly the desolate road conditions in the country. Potholes, extreme speeds and a lack of safety standards in buses and cars mean that there are dangerous accidents on a regular basis.

    Best time to visit Mozambique

The seasons in the tropics are divided into a rainy season and a dry season. November to April is the rainy season where the temperatures are extremely humid-hot and rarely fall underneath 30° C. In contrast, the dry season between May and October is characterized by much cooler nights, although the average daytime temperatures are still high at about 28 degrees.

Hence, the winter season between May and November is when to go to Mozambique for cooler temperatures and the least chance of rain

    Malaria prophylaxis

The greatest threat to the population and visitors alike is the nationwide and year-round widespread malaria. Transmissioned by the bite of nocturnal mosquitoes, it is often fatal in non-immune Europeans when left untreated.

Depending on your travel profile, search for advice in the nearest tropical institute in your hometown. There, you will learn that for malaria prophylaxis, several prescription medications such as Atovaquone and Doxycycline are available. Equally important is the taking of standby preparations – especially if you plan to stay longer in Mozambique.

    All travelers are advised:
✓ to wear body-covering clothing especially during the evening and at night
✓ to apply insect repellent especially in the evening and at night
✓ to sleep underneath a mosquito net.

    Be aware

Always drive carefully and be aware of pedestrians using the roads. Cross-country driving in the dark is especially dangerous and should be avoided.

In the rainy season from November to April, roads can be impassable due to flooding. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to the districts of Palma, Mocimboa de Praia and Macomia in Cabo Delgado province due to an increase in attacks by groups with links to Islamic extremism.

✓ The best travel time to see humpback whales is in the dry season between June and October.
